Man Ray
To begin, Man Ray was a visual artist who spent most of his time in Paris. According to Wikipedia, "He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Man Ray is also noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" in reference to himself.
Following that, Man Ray was involved in various different types of art. His artwork spanned from painting, film, prints, sculpture, etc. "For Man Ray, photography often operated in the gap between art and life. It was a means of documenting sculptures that never had an independent life outside the photograph," according to The Art Story. Basically, this means that Man Ray tried to give his photographs there own meaning, so that they meant something to people who observed the photographs. Also, Man Ray was kind of described as a pre-surrealist because even before that movement occurred, his artwork had surrealist undertones and he used them all throughout his life in the artwork that he constructed.
The photograph of Man Rays I included really conveys his type of artwork well. As you can see, the image conveys surrealism as it is an image of a women with a sort of violin on her back, creating a surrealistic feeling. I really like this image because it is really neat how he was able to create this photograph and mix painting into it to create such an interesting, unique image.
